Dog and Cat Allergy Awareness
This month at Pet Planet, we are talking about Allergies.
Whether food-related or environmental, allergies can be tricky to pinpoint and can have a variety of impacts on your pet’s health. But did you know that only 10% of pet allergies are caused by food-related issues? This means that 90% of the time, our pets are reacting to environmental impacts. So what else do you need to know?
All you need to know about Allergies… you can find it here. But before you delve too deep, let’s talk about first steps when dealing with allergies in your pets.
One of the most important things you can do to help your pet with food-related “allergies” is to first determine if the reaction they are having is actually an allergy or an intolerance. It may be harder to pinpoint, but it could mean a difference in how you approach the issue.
When your pet’s immune system mistakenly identifies a particular food ingredient as harmful. Once that happens, the immune system creates defensive antibodies that will fight the “invading enemy”- the food. Symptoms of an allergy usually include skin rash, hives, itchy paws, obsessive licking and sometimes nausea or vomiting.
Usually isolated as a digestive issue, rather than an immune response. Meaning that your pet cannot digest a specific ingredient leading to digestive upset. Symptoms for an intolerance include gas, bloating, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.
By working to determine allergy vs. intolerance you will be more prepared to support your pet, and will allow us to make better suggestions for supportive tools as well.
